Beethoven's Violin Used for RecordingAugust 3, 2006
Ludwig van Beethoven's own violin has been used for a recording for the first time on a CD of the composer's violin and piano sonatas. German violinist Daniel Sepec played the instrument. The violin left the hands of the Beethoven family at the start of the 19th century and was later found in the possession of an American woman whose aunt emigrated from Austria to the U.S. in the 1930's. She sold it to the Bonn-based Beethoven Foundation eleven years ago for a symbolic sum of money. The instrument, which is engraved with Beethoven's insignia, was restored in 1848 and again after it was acquired by the foundation. The CD has been released with a 31-page booklet recounting the history of the instrument.
